A group of King’s High old girls who had started here in 1972 came back to school on Saturday 10th October to celebrate thirty years since most of them took ‘A’ levels and went out into the big wide world. They were able to tour the school, remembering old haunts and marvelling at new buildings, before and after having a wonderful buffet lunch prepared by Mrs. Dudley at school.
Memories of school life abounded, such as setting an alarm clock to go off in class, playing ‘scrag’, a violent version of tag, in the lunch hour, which was later banned for being too dangerous, and writing to ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ to ask to meet Starsky and Hutch and ride around in their flash car! A toast was given and a collection taken in memory of Sue Shalloe (later Kendall), a classmate who had recently passed away.
One old girl wrote: ‘As we walked around our old classrooms, what struck me very forcibly was that I hadn't appreciated until now just how much being at KHS had played a part in shaping who I am today. The value of hard work, consideration for others, the friendship, but most of all that I mattered, as a person, as an individual, with my own ideas, thoughts, goals and aspirations, and that I was valued just as much as each and every one of my classmates. Yes, I will come back again, to see old friends, and also to remember, and give thanks for, the girl I was and how KHS helped turn her into the woman I am today.‘
