Old Girl Gaynor Keeble made a welcome visit to her alma mater on Saturday September 18. Since leaving school in 1981, Gaynor has had a highly successful career as a mezzo soprano, gracing the stages of opera houses all over the world. Her visit to the school took the form of a fundraising recital, for which she gave her services free of charge. Three of her students joined her on stage, Amy Cate Walsh and Phoebe Jeanes, both of whom have recently left school and are going on to study music at York and Birmingham Universities, and Alex Spencer who is in Year 12 at school. The singing trio were accompanied at the piano by Colin Druce, who is on the music staff at King’s.
Three Little Maids
The first half of the recital comprised lieder and operatic arias, duets and trios, while the second half took the form of songs from the shows, together with Gilbert and Sullivan excerpts, including an hilarious rendition of Three Little Maids From School, complete with school uniform!
An audience of pupils, staff, governors, parents and members of the public enjoyed a festival of song, and the comment most frequently heard as the audience left was, “How soon can you get Gaynor to come back?”.
