Examples of Girls' Career Paths

Helen Castor (Left 1986)

“King’s provided the most inspiring history lessons you could imagine, which heightened my desire to go and study the subject at university. I am still in touch with the friends I made at school and we have fond memories of our time here.”

Helen Castor, a pupil at King’s between 1979 and 1986, went to Cambridge to study History, graduating in 1989. She then stayed on at Cambridge to further her history studies by completing a PhD at Gonville Caius. Following this she went on to Jesus College as a Research Fellow prior to taking up a lectureship at Sydney Sussex College until 2002. For the past three years Helen has focussed on writing full time. She has recently published Blood and Roses, the biographical story of a family living through the War of the Roses. The book certainly encourages our girls currently studying history.

Jo Marshall (Left 2001)

“King’s gave me a good grounding in maths as a taster for university. Working in small groups and attending Oxbridge preparation set me up for the future.”

After graduating from Oxford with a Master of Maths, Jo has gone on to join Deutschebank as a Global Markets Analyst. At King’s she was a prefect, Captain of the netball team, a member of the first hockey team and a keen musician. She left the school in 2001. Jo continued all her school interests at Oxford, where she captained Oriel College ladies and mixed hockey teams, as well as rowing for her college. Today she is relishing the challenge of working in one of the world’s leading banking institutions.

Caitlin Mottram (Left 1995)

“The school really did equip me well for my chosen career, and was very supportive of my acting pursuits. I felt I was given the confidence and belief in myself to go out and achieve my goals, which I know is a feeling shared by most of my contemporaries at the school.”

A member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Caitlin recently starred as Helena in a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and Phoebe in “As You Like It”. We were delighted that she was able to visit us recently and speak to our girls about how she developed her acting career. Caitlin left King’s High in 1995 after which she attended Sheffield University to study English Literature. On graduation, she won a place at the prestigious RADA, leaving there in 2001 to embark on her acting career. Caitlin remembers the school fondly, and in particular the theatrical productions in which she took part. She recalls that the “Comedy of Errors” in particular was a lot of fun.
