About our Curriculum

Our curriculum at King’s High has been carefully designed to provide opportunities for all our pupils to learn, succeed and develop the key skills needed to fulfil our aims. Highly qualified and experienced staff give girls an experience of a wide range of subjects throughout Key Stage 3 to enable them to make informed option choices for GCSE level. At Key Stage 4 girls study a mixture of core and option subjects after careful consideration and advice to maximise their success and keep doors open into higher education and career paths. Girls then progress into the Sixth Form where they study AS and A2 levels in an even wider range of subjects. The result is outstanding achievement and a track record of sending girls to top universities on highly competitive courses.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11) our girls follow a core curriculum of mathematics, English Language, English Literature, core science and additional science. The sciences are taught by separate specialists. All students also follow a general RS course, have regular PE/Games sessions and follow a comprehensive PSHE programme. In addition they select a further 4 GCSE subjects including at least one modern foreign language. The subjects on offer at GCSE include French, German, Spanish, Latin, geography, history, RS, music, art, drama, DT (product design), food technology and ICT. Further details about the specifications can be found in the downloadable GCSE options booklet.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 (Year 7-9) girls study a wide range of subjects to give them an experience in as many areas of study as possible in advance of making decisions ready for Key Stage 4.

In Year 7 girls study maths, English, French, art, drama, geography, history, games and PE, RS, music, DT, food technology, science and ICT. They also receive sessions on swimming and health education as well as PSHE time. Girls complete on average one and a quarter hours’ homework per evening. There is currently no setting in any subjects in Year 7.

In Year 8 girls study the same broad curriculum as in Year 7 (with the exception of swimming and food technology). In addition they choose a second modern language from either Spanish or German and also begin to study Latin. Girls are set in maths and in modern languages; they also begin to study the sciences separately. They will receive from one and a half to two hours’ homework per evening.

In Year 9 similar breadth and setting arrangements are provided as for Year 8 and food technology is reintroduced into the curriculum. In order to provide the breadth of experience across the year some subjects are studied for part of the year only. During the spring term of Year 9 girls will make their choices for GCSEs. In Year 9 girls receive approximately two and a half hours’ homework per evening.
