Drama
There are many exciting extracurricular opportunities in drama, here at King’s High. We encourage girls from all years to take part. Our students’ involvement is marked by great energy, commitment and creativity, whether they participate as directors, actors or as part of a production team.
Key Stage 3
Our highly popular lunchtime Junior Drama Clubs enable girls to extend their creative and performance skills in a relaxed environment. Many girls audition for the Junior Production which takes place every year in the Summer Term, usually at the Bridge House Theatre. We have large numbers involved in both cast and crew. The standard is high and the productions are supported by professional designers. We vary performance choices to include both musical and non-musical plays. We encourage everyone to audition and, if unsuccessful one year, we keep names to ensure they have the opportunity to be involved at some point during KS3. Whole School
Our Autumn Term Production is a chance for girls to work with staff and professional designers in a focused way, leading to performances held at the Bridge House Theatre. As with our Junior Production, we vary choices to include both musical and non-musical plays. The former are often held in collaboration with Warwick School. The superb quality of performances reflects the personal drive of our students to perform to their highest potential.
We aim to inspire the girls to become involved in a wide range of drama experiences, from workshops with theatre companies such as Frantic Assembly to external events such as the BBC’s Off by Heart Shakespeare competition. In April 2012 a number of our girls are touring Canada with the Foundations Youth Theatre Company [ a Saturday activity run by Warwick School], performing ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ to audiences in schools in the Toronto region. LAMDA
We offer lessons in Verse and Prose, Solo Acting, Duologue Acting, Spoken English, and Speaking in Public. Sessions can include aspects of all of these, but one is usually chosen for examination. LAMDA helps students gain confidence, develop self awareness and engenders effective communication skills, whether or not they decide to take the examinations. In 2011/2012, all pupils in year 7 will have a unit of group LAMDA lessons to explore and enhance presentation techniques, as part of their curriculum. The extracurricular lessons are available to students from all year groups. The ability to speak with confidence, will not only be of benefit during a student’s school career, but will help them achieve their true potential in the future. With outstanding examination results and increasing numbers of enthusiastic, motivated pupils, the LAMDA department is expanding. The future of LAMDA at King’s is an exciting one!
Dance
Dance is a popular extracurricular choice for girls with after school Ballet and Contemporary classes as well as Hip Hop lunchtime sessions. There is no prerequisite for previous experience but our teachers adapt to and stretch students, whatever their ability level. Our annual Dance Evening showcases the girls’ work.
