The start of a new year

We welcome 95 new Year 7 girls to our school this week.

The start of the new school year is a memorable and enjoyable time for all our girls and we are particularly pleased to welcome new starters in all year groups.

The first day at school was an exciting one. Our new Year 7 girls started school on Tuesday, 2nd September and enjoyed a day getting to know their surroundings and more importantly, each other.

On their second day they met their sixth form “mothers” – a scheme to encourage the older girls to take part in the care of the younger ones. Each pair had ample opportunity to chat while enjoying ice-creams. There will be plenty of opportunity to provide support to each other in the coming days, weeks and through the forthcoming year.

· Emma Watts

The seven girls were among 82 candidates sitting GCSE examinations in school this year.

Nunu Tao, a Year 10 pupil, gained an A* in Chinese and was placed within the top 10 students in the country.

Overall the school has achieved another set of excellent results:

  • 51.2% of grades were the top mark, A*
  • 87.2% of the total entries resulted in A* or A grades
  • 42 out of the 82 girls (51%) obtained all A* or A grades
  • 73 out of 82 girls (89%) achieved 5 or more A or A* grades.

Headmistress Elizabeth Surber said: “We are again delighted with the achievement of our GCSE girls this year. Their hard work and dedication have been rewarded. Well done to all.

A Level Success

All seventy-five King’s High pupils have passed their A levels indicating another exciting year of success for the school.

All Year 13 girls sat at least three A levels with just over one-third (34.7%) achieving all A grades. Over half (55.4%) of all entries are A grade, with 85% of the A levels awarded at A and B grades.

Success was achieved across the board in subjects such as German (100% at grade A), Art (87.5% at grade A), French (80% at grade A) and English Literature (75% at grade A).

With this success come prestigious university places for King’s girls. Six girls achieved their qualifying grades for Oxbridge places. Among them was Hermione Mackay who was among one of the top ten students in the country.

Hermione sat the English Language and Literature exam earlier this summer and the results, issued this month, show that out of the 3204 candidates, Hermione, who was also a pupil at Coten End primary school, achieved one of the highest overall marks. She will be going to St John’s College, Cambridge to read Medieval and Modern Languages. Hermione also achieved grade A in all her subjects plus two distinctions in Advanced Extension Awards in German and French – an outstanding achievement.

King’s High Headmistress, Elizabeth Surber, is delighted with the school’s success saying “This is a great result for our school. It is a great tribute to the dedication of our staff, the hard work of our girls and the support of their parents. I am particularly pleased that this success will enable the majority of girls to continue their studies at the university of their choice.
