Fiona Saunders to set up a new African Orphan Charity

Fiona Saunders was a pupil at King’s High School Warwick from 1995-2002. She is currently working in Birmingham as a Specialist in Poisons Information.

Fiona Saunders’ first experience of Africa was in 2000, when she took part in a World Challenge Expedition with other girls from King’s High School, Warwick. They travelled around South Africa and Swaziland over the course of four weeks, and this was the beginning of Fiona’s fascination and love affair with this beautiful continent.

Since then, Fiona has visited Africa on a number of occasions volunteering, and has always been particularly drawn to Kenya. In March 2009, she returned to the Kenyan coast on a family holiday, staying on Diani Beach. She realised how much she had missed Africa and knew she had to return to do more volunteer work. With that in mind, she booked a three week volunteer placement on the coast for October 2009 through IVHQ and their partner Kenyan organisation Fadhili Community.

Onesmas from the Njuguna Project

In October 2009, while staying with an amazing host family in Ukunda, she spent her time teaching at a local orphanage, Born Again. It broke her heart having to leave when her placement was over.

It was then that Fiona decided that Kenya is where she was meant to be, and she set about researching the possibility of starting her own project on the Kenyan coast.

Fiona is returning to Kenya in March 2010 for three weeks to complete some in-country research into the possibilities of starting up her own small children's home. She plans to move to Kenya for approximately one year in July 2010 to fully set up the Njuguna Children’s Project. During that time she will be living with the same host family that she lived with in her two previous volunteering visits to Ukunda.

Pupil Rewarded for Voluntary Work

Year 11 pupil, Hannah Fitzpatrick was recently presented with a “V50” certificate at the charity run cafe within the Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital, marking 50 hours of voluntary work that she completed during the summer holidays.

Hannah initially volunteered for the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) early last year, as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and was keen to carry on. By giving up her time during the summer holidays, Hannah managed to complete 50 hours and she is now aiming for her 100 hour certificate.

Furthermore, Hannah has been invited by the WRVS to join a newly establish Youth Action Team and has become a Youth Volunteering Ambassador. She is the youngest member of this team and will help to assess ways that the WRVS can promote and attract youth volunteering.

Carnival Week

A special assembly was held in February to mark a week of celebrating carnivals across the world. Miss Montiel described the importance of carnival in her native country, Venezuela, and the Year 10 girls demonstrated the importance of such festivals in France, Italy, Spain and Germany. During the week Year 7 girls enjoyed making colourful carnival masks and Year 8 had fun making pancakes.

Former pupil Emma Ward wins top PR industry award

Former pupil Emma Ward has been crowned Young Communicator of the Year at a national PR awards. Emma, who left KHS after A levels in 1998, received the honour at the Public Relations Consultants Association (PRCA) Awards held in London.

Emma developed a career in the industry after graduating from the University of Reading and then completing a post graduate course in Public and Media Relations at Cardiff University. She is now PR Manager at Marketing Birmingham, an organisation which promotes the city to leisure and business visitors.

During her four years with the company, Emma has managed a variety of PR campaigns and media activity for the Taste of Birmingham food festival and BBC Good Food Show, and a city feature on BBC’s Holiday programme.

Hermione Mackay - Rowing Blue

Old Girl Hermione Mackay (2001-2009) has been selected to stroke the first VIII - the Blue Boat - for Cambridge in the annual women’s boat race against Oxford on March 28^th. Hermione was senior prefect during her last year in school, and also held senior swimming colours. She took up rowing at Cambridge and trains eleven times a week, getting up before 6 a.m. most mornings!

Hermione’s sporting success is only rivalled by her academic prowess. She is studying French, German and Dutch at St John's College, Cambridge. She is a scholar of the college, having received a First last year and has been treated to a special dinner and to reading the Latin grace in hall.

We would like you to tell us what sort of events you would like us to organise. Currently, we produce the High Times Newsletter twice a year, and organise a London reunion event in April, and a Decade Day Lunch in June. We also help organise the OGA lunch in March. What else would you enjoy as a way both of keeping in touch with old schoolfriends, and also of keeping in touch with the school? A Christmas lunch? In school or elsewhere? A rambling club? The OGA was founded in 1902, and continues to this day as voluntary organisation administered by, and for, old girls and former staff of the school.

We currently have over 2,050 members.

The committee is chaired by the President (our headmistress, Mrs. Elizabeth Surber), and administered by a secretary (Mrs. Polly Beidas) and treasurer (Miss Ruth Court) with a committee of about twelve others. We also have honorary Vice-Presidents, who need no introduction, and are Miss Leahy, Miss Greenwood, Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Russell. Our staff representative is Mrs. Catharine Walker from the current PE staff.

Lucie Browning - Hockey Star

Former Deputy Head Girl (2007-2008) Lucie Browning,

has her fingers crossed for the university hockey event of the year. Lucie, who is in her second year reading engineering at Cambridge University, plays in the University Blues Team and hopes to be selected for the crucial Varsity Match between Cambridge and Oxford. The match takes place on March 2^nd at Southgate stadium in London.

Not content with hockey, Lucie also captains the university Real Tennis team who have their varsity game against Oxford on Saturday 20^th February at the prestigious Lords Cricketground in London.

The Warwick Schools independent State School partnership is a collaborative venture between all the Warwick schools, both primary and secondary, that is aimed primarily at providing enhanced opportunities for Gifted and Talented students in 3 key areas of the curriculum: science, modern foreign languages and mathematics. Our specific responsibility is to coordinate the mathematics programme and we are grateful to Andrew Wild who is the partnership’s mathematics subject coordinator and Stephen Bethel our Deputy Head Academic who represents the school on the ISSP steering committee.

We have been extremely keen to ensure that our girls are able to make the most of the opportunities presented to them through the programme and a number of girls across a range of years and subjects have been involved.
