On Wednesday 2 May we were treated to the Senior Summer Concert in the Guy Nelson Hall. This is always an event tinged with some sadness as it the last formal performance for Year 13. Director of Music, Matthew Smallwood said, “The concert is a tribute to the exceptional standard of musical talent we have at King’s High”.

Young Enterprise company, Cheers!, have consolidated their win at the Central Warwickshire Finals by taking the Best Company Award at the Coventry & Warwickshire Young Enterprise Awards Evening held on Thursday 3 May. The judges were very impressed with their idea of producing drink-awareness mats, and thought it had great potential. The money for their business comes from advertising space sold on the reverse side of the safety message. The beer mats have already been distributed to around 25 pubs and restaurants in Warwickshire and their ultimate goal is to distribute nationwide.

Fifty pupils and seven members of staff braved the elements in the Peak District at the end of the Easter Holidays for their Silver practice Duke of Edinburgh Expedition. This involved walking 40km in over three days carrying 15kg rucksacks and spending two nights out camping. Despite very exacting weather conditions such as snow and sleet, the girls rose to the challenge and successfully completed the trip.

Congratulations to our LAMDA pupils who have attained outstanding exam results again this year with a 100% pass rate including 38 distinctions and 28 merits. Two pupils achieved over 90% in Acting and in Public Speaking which is a tremendous achievement.

The exam options available to LAMDA pupils such as Solo Acting, Public Speaking and Duologues, allow the girls to develop areas of interest whilst enhancing their self-confidence and self-esteem. Mrs Sue Marshall, LAMDA teacher, commented “It is wonderful to experience the pupils going through the eye of the needle, particularly in Public Speaking, where they gain the confidence to share their opinions and thoughts with different target audiences. This can really help them to develop their communication skills, for now and for the future.”

There was a great atmosphere in the School Hall on Wednesday 21 March as staff, governors, parents and friends of the school gathered for an evening of Jazz. Mr Smallwood (Director of Music) welcomed guests and promised a "veritable feast of music styles" for the audience. The pupils put on a wonderful performance and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all.

Alice Chandler (Year 9) has won the Mother's Day Card competition run by local business Card Town. On Friday 9 March, she was presented with copy of her finished design together with a Nintendo 3DS and £250 cheque for the King's High Art Department . Alice's design was inspired by her Mother's generosity, "My mum would always give me the biggest slice of something, or the final piece, and that is something I've always loved".

Pupils delighted the audience with a wonderful display of dance at their annual concert on Thursday 8 March. The high standard of their performance was testimony to the tremendous hard work put in by the girls and their teachers - Sara Higgins, Genevieve Ollerearnshaw and Liz England. The programme included an impressive range of dance from hip hop to theatrical pieces and demonstrated the skills they have been developing in class.

Twenty-four King’s High girls have received awards of up to £300 in this year’s Personal Achievement Awards. The scheme, run by KHAPS, encourages King’s girls to pursue their out-of-school interests, passions and ambitions. Girls can apply for an award to help fund the cost of an activity or project that they will find personally rewarding and enriching.

The supported projects are diverse and interesting, and range from volunteering in a childrens’ refuge in Mexico, to rearing rescued battery hens, to taking part in a politics and debating summer school. Full details are available on the pupils’ and parents’ portals.

Congratulations to all our award winners.
