LAMDA pupils performed to a full house on Wednesday 1 February. Girls had the opportunity to showcase their talents with solo and ensemble performances. The pieces, from classic to contemporary, were cleverly interwoven to complement each other and kept the audience completely engaged.

Mrs Sue Marshall (LAMDA Teacher) commented, "I am incredibly proud of the teamwork, support and the outstanding talents of these girls. I feel very privileged to be teaching them".

We wish the all the pupils well for their LAMDA examinations next week.

Top University Places for King's High Girls

Congratulations to our five girls who have been offered places at the prestigious Oxford and Cambrige Universities. Despite ever increasing competition for places, these students, with the full support of King's High, were able to secure offers to study their chosen subjects. These range from Modern Medieval Languages to Veterinary Medicine.

Summer 2011 - Treasure Island

Some might say choosing Treasure Island as the Junior Production was a strange idea considering there are only two female roles, but they would obviously have not come across the energy and skill of our King’s High girls. Amidst a stunning set, in a theatre filled with atmospheric lighting effects, our KS3 cast created a world of enchantment and menace. The girls revealed their true ability to work as a powerful ensemble.

The audience delighted in the lively sea shanties, coached by Dr Barwell with great aplomb. Well done to Caitlin O’Driscoll for leading the chorus and to Juliet Wallace whose accomplished dancing added a wonderful addition to the Inn scene. Sofie Ward tackled the extensive dialogue and created a Long John Silver who both charmed and unsettled the audience, as did his wife played with flair by Ronay Poole.

Well done to all the cast and it would be wrong to forget the outstanding contribution of the backstage team - none of whom will ever wish to see a barrel again! The piece rested on the power of their contributions - their energy and timing. As the sun seemed to set, musically accompanied by Martha Allen-Smith’s haunting violin playing, and the stage filled with the cast, everyone in the audience felt the scope of Robert Louis Stevenson’s story.

KIng's High Pupils Awarded for Outstanding Essays

Two Year 11 pupils, Katherine Heller and Imogen Rhodes, each received prizes of £100 for outstanding essays on Science and Belief. Their awards, along with a £400 honorarium to the Religious Studies Department, were made in recognition of the School’s involvement with a national project funded by the John Templeton Foundation.

Rotary Chef of the Year

Year 10 Food Technology pupils cooked up a storm in the first two rounds of the Rotary Chef of the Year competition. With a fixed £8.00 budget for ingredients and battling against the clock, the pupils were judged by local chef, Bernard Mintz, and two members of the Warwick Rotary Club, Mrs Francis and Mrs Guest. The standard was extremely high and the judges commented on how calm they all were under pressure, even when given the ‘one minute to go’ command! Congratulations to Sofia Antona and Bryony Atkin who will proceed to the next regional round.

Autumn 2011 - Trojan Women

Jane Whitehouse’s powerful adaptation and direction of Euripides’s brutal and tragic account of the aftermath of the Trojan Wars gripped the audience. The young people in the cast, from both King’s High and Warwick School, were challenged to tell stories and express emotion otherwise, we hope, witnessed only on the television screen when reports of violent scenes around the 21st century world confront us.

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell was published, the microwave oven was invented and some of the most notable crooners included Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Sir Winston Churchill was Prime Minster, the first plastic Coke bottle appeared in the 1950s, Elvis Presley became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll and winklepickers, beehives and pony tails became fashionable.

Isobel Williams, Beth Irving (Year 12), and Juliet Wallace (Year 11) took part in the The Young Musician Competition sponsored by our local Rotary Club and held at Warwick School. The first round of the competition was held in conjunction with Warwick School and adjudicated by Paul McGrath, Director of Music at Warwick University.

Leavers' Christmas Reunion 2012

Nearly seventy Old Girls (not very old!) from the 2010 and 2011 leavers, plus around twenty members of staff, came to a post-Christmas reunion on Thursday January 5 2012. The event took the form of an after school tea party and was held in the newly refurbished dining room.

AmnesTEA

On December 8 the Amnesty International group at King's held their second AmnesTEA. Parents, friends and pupils gathered to drink tea, eat cake and sign cards as part of the annual greetings card campaign that Amnesty organises to show solidarity with prisoners around the world who are denied their human rights. In addition there was live music supplied by girls in KS4 and 5, and a second-hand bookstall and tombola helped to raise funds. To date £300 has been raised - a tremendous achievement by the girls who arranged the event. Thank you to all who supported this event.

Adverse Weather Procedure

We hope, of course, we shall not have to implement this procedure but it’s important you all know what to do:

"The Foundation schools usually remain open unless the weather is very bad. We have to leave it to the judgment of parents as to whether it is safe and sensible for their daughters to come to school. We do not expect anyone to try to undertake a journey in unreasonable conditions or where there might be a risk of the home journey later in the day proving to be unduly difficult or unsafe. On recent snowy days it was impossible to run a normal school timetable, so girls who were absent were not in fact missing lessons. Exceptionally, if a decision is made jointly by the Foundation schools that conditions are so bad that it is best to close, that message should be broadcast on local radio from around 7am. A message will be posted on the school website, school telephone answering machine and emailed/texted to parents.”

I stress I do not want you to struggle to get your daughter here at all costs when the weather is very bad or looks as if it’ll turn that way during the day, and it’s possible that we’ll have to close the school early anyway. What we can do on such days with limited staff cover and relatively few pupils is of very limited value educationally.

If there were to be a prolonged closure it is vital that girls work at home, especially the seniors. We can email work but they need to think ahead and take their books and materials home so they can do it!
