Art and Design

Our studios are on the top floors of the newly refurbished Creative Arts Centre where skylights and high ceilings create inspiring studio spaces.

We interpret art and design as broadly as possible and have close links with the design and technology department, providing girls with the opportunity of learning everything from traditional painting and drawing techniques to installation and mixed media.

Several girls have had successes in local, national and international competitions and additional workshops such as life drawing for the sixth form are run on a regular basis.

At both GCSE and A Level students follow the AQA fine art course which, again, allows for the broadest possible explorations of creativity and the development of individual ideas. Candidates have done exceptionally well, some gaining full marks for their GCSE or A Level coursework and controlled assessments.

In the Sixth Form girls can take History of Art as a separate subject. We arrange regular gallery visits both in this country and abroad.

Business Studies

Business Studies offers sixth form girls the opportunity to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to the world of work. It supports each pupil's personal development, encouraging independence, initiative and perseverance as well as ensuring the best possible examination results at both AS and A2 level.

We provide a stimulating environment with opportunities to work both individually and as part of a team and also encourage an awareness of Business Studies beyond the classroom through visits and outside speakers.

You will acquire a range of transferable skills including decision-making, problem solving and the interpretation and management of qualitative and quantitative data. The course ensures that you are prepared for whatever business role you may undertake in your career.

Classics

The classical world is very much alive at Kings! All students in Years 8 and 9 study Latin; the vocabulary that they learn expands their English vocabulary and helps them with modern foreign languages. They translate Latin stories into English and study the grammar; as well as improving their grasp of English language, this encourages accuracy and helps the girls to develop their problem solving skills.

All our teaching is set in the context of life in the ancient world, opening up the fascinating Roman world to students. We offer Latin at GCSE and A level following the OCR examination board specification.
