At King’s High School, sustainability isn’t just a concept but a deeply ingrained ethos that mirrors the school’s core values.
Over the past few years, students’ passion for environmental issues has only grown stronger, with a distinct focus on local and global challenges. The school has given the student body ownership of several environmental initiatives, empowering them to lead the charge in making King’s a greener, more sustainable place to study. This partnership between students and staff has fostered a culture in which every individual feels responsible for the world around them, while continuing to excel academically and creatively.
King’s High has already achieved several successes that demonstrate its commitment to sustainability. The school was awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award, recognising the ongoing efforts of both students and staff to minimise environmental impact. This success was driven by the Environmental Action Society, which has organised events such as the ‘Earth Week’ celebrations, second-hand clothing sales, charity fairs in the quad, and the planting of a wildflower garden. Building on the inspiration of the students, a new clothing bank has been installed to strengthen our commitment to reducing the impact of fast fashion.
Throughout the school, we are constantly looking for ways to promote sustainability and channel the students’ passion for the natural world around us. The Reflection Garden, designed in response to the challenges of the pandemic, showcases the school’s dedication to both environmental sustainability and emotional wellbeing, providing a tranquil space for students to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. Animal welfare is also a key component of environmentalism, and this academic year a new student-led co-curricular group has been created to focus on this area, aiming to run fairs and raise funds for local wildlife charities. This runs alongside the continuation of the successful Bee Club and Happy Hens Club, where students monitor and care for the school’s wildlife.
Looking ahead, the school is far from complacent. Future initiatives include the development of a weather station on campus, which will allow students to engage in hands-on learning about meteorology and microclimates, while the introduction of sustainability officers in each form will ensure that environmental issues remain a priority across all levels. King’s High School is not only preparing students to achieve academic success but also to enjoy the journey of making a tangible difference in the world around them.
