It is Your Time to Shine

It is Your Time to Shine

Exams and assessments can feel a little overwhelming, especially when pressure builds and emotions run high. However, understanding what is happening in your body can help you approach challenges with greater confidence and control. One important hormone involved in stress activation is cortisol. Although cortisol is often described negatively, it is not the enemy. In fact, it is your body’s natural way of getting your attention, helping you rise to a challenge and can be your greatest ally in spurring you on to channel your energy for excelling under pressure.

When you feel nervous before an exam, your heart may beat faster, and your mind may become more alert. This is you getting ready for action.  Rather than interpreting these feelings as signs of failure or rising panic, try to see them as evidence that your body is preparing you to perform well. Athletes, performers and public speakers experience similar sensations before important moments. The feeling of “stress” can be reframed as excitement, as readiness and primes you to rise to an occasion on which you have placed importance.

A helpful way to manage exam pressure is to change the narrative you tell yourself. Instead of thinking: “I might not do well,” replace it with, “I am getting prepared to do my best”. Instead of saying: “I can’t cope with this feeling” try, “I feel discomfort right now, but this feeling is temporary, and I can work through it.”

Positive self-talk can make a significant difference our confidence and focus. Think of how you would encourage a friend who was struggling and use the same words to encourage yourself. “I am capable of succeeding this in this exam room.” “I have worked hard and this is my chance to show that.” “This might be hard, but I can do this.”

Most importantly, remember that exams are only one part of your journey. Your worth is not measured by grades alone. Growth, resilience and effort matter just as much, and every challenge you overcome helps build confidence for the future.

Now, get hydrated, take some deeps breaths, and go for it!
