New Beginnings, New Chapters

New Beginnings, New Chapters

A new academic year is like opening a brand-new notebook; the pages are clean and unmarked, the possibilities feel endless, and yet there can be a strange mixture of excitement and uncertainty about what comes next.  What are you supposed to write on the first page?  What if you make a mistake and it no longer looks all shiny and undisturbed?

A new beginning might mean joining a new school, making new friends, starting a new subject, taking on greater responsibility or simply finding your feet after the long summer. There will be some things that are the same, but change is also inevitable. There are new routines, new challenges, new teachers and the familiar feeling that time is moving rather quickly.

It is important to remember that beginnings and endings usually exist at the same time. Starting something new may mean leaving something familiar behind. We might feel excited and nervous, hopeful and sad, confident and unsure, and sometimes all at once. Aren’t humans gloriously and bafflingly complicated! These feelings are not contradictions; they are a natural part of growing and changing.

As you begin whatever new chapters you are starting, give yourself permission to take things one step at a time. You don’t need to have everything figured out on the first page.  You will also make mistakes and move on from them, as will we all.

There is no perfect way to begin anything. What matters is that we begin and do so with kindness, curiosity and hope.  You never know, this may be the very best chapter yet…
