King’s High is a warm, caring and compassionate school, underpinned by a culture of kindness that pervades all aspects of school life. Throughout the school, students look out for one another and support one another instinctively and through our structured peer-mentoring programmes. This ethos is purposefully built and sustained through our values of empathy and understanding and a recognition of the value of having a positive impact on each other and our wider community.
The aim of our pastoral ethos is to nurture the character virtues, self-esteem and confidence of each of our students, resulting in a lifelong sense of wellbeing, with strong personal development, growth and self-knowledge. We aim to create an inspiring community of upstanders and changemakers with ethical, emotional and environmental intelligence.
In recent years, we have developed a national profile for the quality of our pastoral programme and our work in promoting a supportive, kind and nurturing environment in which each student is known and valued as an individual.
Ms Whittington, our Deputy Head – Pastoral and Wellbeing, leads the Pastoral Team of Heads of Key Stage, Heads of Year and Form Tutors, further supported by our Mental Health Lead, Wellbeing Mentor and School Nurse. They work closely together to create a culture of care and compassion to support each student on their journey through King’s High School.
“They talk the talk and walk the walk,” say parents of the pastoral provision, which they largely attribute to the Head and SLT who “exude such fun and enjoyment of their jobs, it filters out to staff and pupils”. One added that “teachers know if the girls are happy – and if not, they quickly find out why and do something about it”.
