Cambridge Chemistry Challenge
Lower Sixth pupils have competed in the (famously testing) Cambridge Chemistry Challenge. They won one Silver and eight Copper Awards.
Year 10 Chemistry pupils have been working with the Royal Society of Chemistry. Dr Grist, Head of Chemistry, reports: ‘Working beyond the curriculum, ten Year 10 pupils have been involved in an analysis project, as part of the international year of the Periodic Table. They have packaged up five unknown samples of over-the-counter medicines, and sent them away for analysis. Once they have the results, they will identify each sample. This will give them experience of preparing a sample for analysis by mass spectrometry, a short tutorial on methods of chromatography, and the opportunity to analyse spectra when the data comes back.’
