Order and Chaos - Café Scientifique

Café Scientifique has gone from strength to strength this year, under the bold leadership of Isabelle and Shraddhaa. Four thought-provoking themes have been explored: Life and DeathDefiance in ScienceChange and Adapt, and most recently, Order and Chaos.

The events team - composed of Emma (Engineering), Eleanor (KS3 Outreach), and Dheepthi, Sana, and Tiffany (Publicity) - have worked hard to deliver a wide range of activities, from talks and workshops to a charity doughnut sale!

The outstanding newsletter editorial team - Cherrie, Sahana, and Karine - have produced professional-standard newsletters for each theme, featuring high-level scientific articles as well as light-hearted, graphic content including cartoons and memes to engage all readers.

Their exceptional work has been nationally recognised: they were finalists in the Shine Media Awards for their Spring Term edition, in the categories of Best Design and Best Cartoon. The team also nominated Mrs Sims, Head of Science, as Most Inspirational Teacher, writing a truly touching tribute as part of the application. The team achieved runner-up in all three categories. Additionally, Shine Media created a new category for Best Magazine on a Single Topic, where they were also runners-up.

Our team returned home with four “Highly Commended” certificates and glowing feedback from the judges. In the design category, the judges praised the publication: “Better than any science magazine has a right to be, this publication is a patchwork quilt of engaging writing and custom illustration. It excels at making a wide range of complex topics - from motor neurones to set point theory - both accessible and compelling, cleverly subverting the subject matter to create something unexpectedly warm and inviting.”
